A Band Called Wretched Skinny

Get ready for an electrifying episode of my new podcast as I sit down with two legends of the underground music scene in New Zealand/Australia - Robbie Bloomfield and Derek Richards! These two musicians were 2/3 of the iconic band Wretched Skinny, which were part of a formidable musical scene in the late 90s and early 2000s.

In this episode, we take a trip down memory lane and explore the humble beginnings of Wretched Skinny, from their roots in New Plymouth to their rise to fame in the gritty underground scene of Wellington. We delve into each individual's musical journey and how they eventually came together to create a sound that was hard, raw, and grimy - a true reflection of the times.

Join us as we listen to three of Wretched Skinny's classic tracks - "6 Miles High", "The Burger King", and "Roachcola" - and relive the magic of their music. We also discuss the changing face of music during that period, as the internet started to have a significant impact on the industry. We discuss the challenges faced by rock music in New Zealand during that time, and how Wretched Skinny overcame those obstacles to become a force to be reckoned with.

In true rock and roll fashion, we discuss the highs and lows of life on the road and the frank reality of drugs and the rock and roll lifestyle.

Sadly, Wretched Skinny's music is not available on any mainstream streaming services, as they were one of the many excellent bands lost in the shift from CDs to streaming. However, you can still find selected tracks here on RadPeopleIknow, so be sure to check them out and relive the magic of Wretched Skinny.

Ultimately, this episode is a testament to the special bond shared by these two musicians over decades of playing together. It's a story that every band can relate to, but it's also unique in its own way. So, sit back, relax, and prepare to be blown away by the incredible talent of Robbie Bloomfield and Derek Richards, and the unforgettable music of Wretched Skinny.

I want to highlight how extraordinary people are every day, by creating space for a diverse number of stories. I strongly believe who we are is our greatest accomplishment. Most of us have been conditioned to define our self-worth by caring about how others evaluate our performance in systems we have been forced to participate in. Life is about who you are, not what you’ve done. You don’t need to be extraordinary to matter, you belong just by existing. I want my guests to appreciate who they are by telling their stories, the stories of ordinary notoriety. Stories help us relate to each other, offer connection and pull us out of the illusion that we are alone. I have been fortunate to travel and live in many places and have met some incredible people. By listening to these stories, you will get to meet some of them here and hopefully, be inspired to appreciate who you are and participate more fully in your own story.
